RV refrigerator not cooling on propane

The fridge cools on shore power but not on propane, or fails to cool on either.

Step-by-step diagnosis

Work in this order. Each step is cheaper or safer than the one after it, so stop as soon as the symptom clears.

  1. Confirm gas supply at another appliance

    Light a stove burner. A strong steady blue flame means supply is adequate. Weak or yellow means solve supply or regulator problems first, because the fridge burner has the least tolerance of any appliance in the RV.

  2. Level the RV and give it time

    Get the coach level, then allow the fridge four to six hours to recover before judging performance. Absorption cooling is slow. Judging a fridge after 30 minutes leads people to replace parts unnecessarily.

  3. Open the exterior access panel and inspect

    Remove the lower exterior vent cover. Look for insect nests, soot, and rodent damage to wiring. Take a photo before disturbing anything so you can reassemble confidently.

  4. Clean the burner and orifice

    Blow out the burner tube with compressed air and clear the orifice. Do not push wire through an orifice: it changes the bore and permanently upsets the gas rate. If the orifice is genuinely blocked, replace it.

  5. Brush the flue

    Run a proper flue brush down the flue tube to clear soot, then blow it out. Refit the baffle exactly as it was, because its position sets the heat transfer rate.

  6. Check the flame quality

    With everything reassembled and gas restored, watch the burner light. You want a crisp blue flame sitting steadily on the burner. Yellow, lifting or fluttering flame means a restriction, a pressure problem, or poor combustion air.

  7. Verify the ignition electrode and thermocouple

    Clean carbon off the electrode with fine abrasive, and check the gap and position against your model's service literature. A thermocouple that has failed will let the burner light and then drop out after a few seconds.

  8. Improve ventilation behind the fridge

    Absorption fridges reject heat through the rear vents and need convective airflow. Confirm both vents are unobstructed. In hot weather a small fan in the upper vent bay measurably improves cooling on a marginal unit.

  • Any strong ammonia smell or yellow powder residue at the rear of the fridge means the cooling unit has ruptured. Stop using it, ventilate, and have it replaced.
